Dance is beneath language.
Not as in “below” or “less than,”
but as in closer to the source:
the source of all things,
the rich and fertile emptiness (Yin)
from which all things (Yang) arise,
there lies dance.
Received through the senses,
felt in the sensual body
beyond rational and irrational.
The mind muddles into madness while the body delights
in the land beneath language, beyond time.
Dance is the spirit that moves me
closer to the source.

I wrote this after seeing the beautiful performances at the Los Angeles Dance Festival 2013 produced by Deborah Brockus and Matt Wells
